When selecting your style for work don't use your peers as a standard. Look to the next job that you would like to have and dress accordingly. People identify with those most like themselves so even a similar appearance in attire can make others more comfortable with you.
So if your in a job and everyone wears khakis and polos or similar garments you can endear yourself by dressing similar to the group. However if you want to be promoted to a position equal to your manager and she wears a silk blouse with dress pants you would do well to emulate her. However, this should be done with a subtle touch. No one wants to feel like they have their own personal mini-me.
