Piddling, Dealing with Life's Distractions

As an owner of a home based business it is critical that I remain disciplined.  It is so easy to become distracted by the phone, email, Han (my giant Rotweiller named after the cute guy in F & F Tokyo Drift), my two boys (age 21 & 24) and the myriad of young people that storm my house on a routine basis.  Today I had a specific list of things to complete by noon.  It is now 11:58 and the only thing on my list that is close to complete is writing in this blog. GEEZ! What have I been doing with all of my time? First, while having my morning coffee I decided that it was really important for me to wash clothes.  While in the laundry room I found my insurance card which must have been in one of the boy's pockets.  Once I had the insurance card I decided it was time to call and make appointments for routine checkups.  While scheduling these appointments an email popped up telling me my cousin was moving.  That immediately led to calling her for more information.  You get the picture.  The morning was a total loss.  I once heard this process referred to as piddling and it is a great word to describe what seems to be a constant rerouting of priorities.

The big question is how do I stop this.  This afternoon I think I'll try to focus on today's goals and if something else needs to be done I will add it to tomorrow's list or put it off until I have finished my work day.  It's the best plan I can come up with so I'll let you know if it is working for me.
