When I was working in sales I once was on a call with a prospective customer to close the deal. It was a large law firm and it was obvious that they wanted a concession before they put pen to ink. I ended up shaving 10% off of the price to close the deal on the spot. Since I did not have the authority to do so I immediately went back to the office to confess my sins. After my manager threatened to fire me he then agreed to support me to the home office. I am certain that without the confession I would have been unemployed just as I am certain that he had no intention of firing me. I don't recommend doing this more than once per manager but if you do the confession will save your hide.
